Recollections of events of the Civil War (1860 to 1865) : 1902 Sept. 1 ; [ typescript] / by Private J.E. Caldwell.

Memoir of Confederate military service recorded for and at the request of Caldwell's daughter, Margaret Caroline Erwin, of Spartanburg, S.C. Caldwell volunteered for service in Capt. J.C.S. Brown's company at Newberry, S.C., on 14 Apr. 1861. There being too many companies, Brown's company was disbanded and Caldwell subsequently joined the company commanded by Capt. James Drayton Nance. This unit encamped at Lightwood Knot Springs, near Columbia, S.C., before being ordered to Virginia in mid-June 1861. Memoir contains a rough chronology of Caldwell's service, including general observations on military engagements of the war, among those referenced by Caldwell are First Manassas, the Maryland campaign, Marye's Heights, Brandy Station, Gettysburg, and Chickamauga, where Caldwell was wounded in action. Caldwell was absent from the battlefield at times as he was detailed to work with the supply wagon trains and on 16 Oct. 1864 was officially detailed as a sergeant in the Ordinance Department.
